New initiative is launched at the 2016 MENA ICT Forum

On 9 November 2016, a new initiative entitled REACH2025 was launched in Amman, in the presence of His Majesty King Abdullah II, at the opening of the 2016 MENA ICT Forum.

The initiative, implemented in collaboration between public and private stakeholders, is being run by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and the Information and Communications Technology Association- Jordan (int@j).

The initiative aims to boost the ICT sector’s revenues and digitize Jordan’s economy, creating 5,000 to 7,000 businesses in digital economy by 2025, as well as 130,000 to 150,000 new digital jobs. The initiative seeks to establish a digital economy in Jordan, which empowers people, sectors and businesses to raise productivity and which accelerates growth and prosperity, creating a highly attractive business destination for investments and international partnerships.

In an address at the event, Bashar Hawamdeh, Chairman of int@j, stressed the importance of the MENA ICT Forum in providing a platform for exchanging ideas and expertise. He also noted that the digitization of the economy is not an option, but the “way forward for a better future and the key to development.”

The MENA ICT Forum is held biennially in Jordan under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II. The Forum has been hosted by int@j every other year since 2002, and transformed from a local conference, the Jordan ICT Forum, into the most significant ICT industry event of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, bringing together ICT professionals, entrepreneurs, experts, policy makers, investors and industry players. The MENA ICT Forum showcases the entire MENA region’s successes in the ICT sector, and discusses latest trends and opportunities for the future.

 

Number of Petra visitors rose by 20% in 2016

Official figures published in early November indicate that the number of tourists who visited the ancient city of Petra during the past three months witnessed a 20 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), Mohammad Nawafleh, a total of 121,559 tourists of multiple nationalities visited Petra over the past three months, compared with 101,638 for the same period in 2015.

Official PDTRA figures also showed that the number of Jordanian visitors to Petra rose by 45 percent during the past three months compared with the same period last year.
